Spring 2022 Workshops
How can students discover attributes and structures through exploration? Come experience the world of geometry in a new way. Look at figures and shapes in new ways, and discover new relationships. Participants will experience investigations designed to support K-2 students' discovery and conceptualization of geometric attributes and structures, including the early conceptualization of fractions. Participants will explore the optimal progression for learning big ideas of geometry. Geometry is an area with significant misconceptions, come and uncover these.

Decimals are introduced as fractions in fourth grade and as magnitudes of place value in fifth grade. How do we make strong connections between these ideas and domains? How do we help students develop a robust understanding of decimals? And how do we help students learn conceptual strategies for operations with decimals? Come and explore these ideas. Please note that this second part will solely focus on decimal division. This workshop is open to all, regardless of attendance to the first part.

The most impactful way to help students grow in their understanding of mathematics is to strengthen their number sense. In this workshop we will consider all the phases of a successful intervention program, including identifying student needs, organizing and choosing meaningful tasks, and modifying groupings and tasks based on students’ progress along a number sense trajectory.

Description: The key to helping kids understand and successfully solve word problems is to help them visualize and decide the overall “structure” and relationships of any given problem. Students are then able to model their problems using tape diagrams, which will then show them what operations to use in order to find the missing piece. Participants will have the opportunity to model problems of various structures using tape diagrams and analyze examples of well-labeled tape diagrams.

Come and explore the purposes for writing in mathematics, useful formats, and many ways that we can write in the elementary mathematics classroom. This is a two-day workshop, and therefore, we will only accept registrants that can attend BOTH sessions. This is a level 2 workshop, allowing teachers that have had experience with IMPACTS sessions to dig deeper. Teachers will collect student mathematics writing in between sessions, and share during session 2.
