Patterns, functions, and graphs - what’s the difference? An expectation in secondary mathematics is to develop student understanding using patterns to represent, model, and analyze relationships in the real world. Come join us as we explore covariation and correspondence through patterns, concrete models, 4-column tasks, and multiple representations.

What is a function and why do we learn about them? What is important for middle school students to understand as they prepare for high school mathematics? What are the advantages and challenges to moving students beyond linear representations? Come join us as we explore activities and tasks using concrete patterns, multiple representations, and ways to assist students as they develop their understanding of functions and functional relationships.

This workshop is appropriate for teachers of 5th grade through high school, paying particular application to the transition to high school mathematics.

Fractions and fraction operations are the foundations for middle school mathematics. They are essential for proportional reasoning, algebra, and probability, yet they are incredibly difficult to learn and teach. In middle schools, it is important to understand students’ previous experiences with fractions in order to develop their algebraic reasoning. Fractions operations intentionally and systematically grow from work in 3rd grade, culminating in fluency with operations with rational numbers in 7th grade. How do we help students move along this path? What strategies will build the concepts clearly and understandably? How do we develop and integrate fluency while also addressing other middle school math topics? Come and explore the developmental path and strategies to move students to deeper understanding of fractions and fraction operations.

Ratios and proportional relationships are critical areas for middle school mathematics and are foundational for further study in mathematics and science, as well as being useful for everyday life. The teaching of ratios and proportional reasoning should build on students’ work in measurement and in multiplication and division in the elementary grades, while also further developing fraction sense as students move from additive to multiplicative thinking. Come and explore the learning trajectory, tasks, and student supports for proportional reasoning, in order to develop a deeper understanding of the Big Idea and the 10 Essential Understandings of ratios, proportions, and proportional reasoning.

Patterns and visualization are critical areas for developing conceptual understanding of mathematics across K-12. Building on elementary school students’ experiences with manipulatives and visual models, middle school teachers can extend the use of concrete and visual representations to connect fractions, ratios, proportions, linear relationships, and functions. Workshop participants will explore developmental trajectories related to the big ideas of pre-algebraic and algebraic thinking through the use of manipulatives and diagrams (e.g., pattern tasks, area models, and Algebra Tiles). Expressions, equations, and inequalities are critical concepts for students transitioning from Elementary arithmetic to High School mathematics. Students progress from the world of concrete representations to abstract thinking, bringing to bear a variety of math trajectories. Workshop participants will explore strategies for building relevance, excitement, and understanding through the use of manipulatives, engaging tasks, and a sound understanding of student learning trajectories.

This workshop is designed to help teachers with previous experience with IMPACTS-MS workshops to dive deeper into their instruction, but it is open to ALL.

A two-day leadership retreat will be offered to teachers who have demonstrated strong professional growth and a desire to become regional mathematics facilitators. The content and pedagogy focus will prepare them to provide regional professional development workshops throughout the school year.

Teachers, students, and their families will join the CRR for a night of fun, playing math, logic, and board games.

A community day for families and people of all ages filled with balloon racing, water tables, and wind sculptures. Open to all of the Tucson community.

Teacher leaders from around the country, including IMPACTS Teacher Teams and Teacher Leaders, present sessions at the MEAD Conference.

Teachers, students, mentors, and families will play games, do puzzles, and explore mathematics concepts around circles and pi.

8 Teacher Teams attend a one-week institute to deeply explore middle school mathematics and to design site plans for professional development to share strategies and content with colleagues in their schools.

Students preparing to enter 6th grade participate in the weeklong Learning Lab where they work in small groups to explore concepts critical to middle grade mathematics. Lab stations are facilitated by local teachers who are refining their instructional practices to best support group collaboration and students’ conceptual understanding. Teacher Leaders from the IMPACTS program serve as whisper coaches to help teachers reflect on and improve their pedagogical moves.
