Induction Project
Mentor teacher Eileen Short from Desert Sky Middle School in the Vail
school district pauses to work with a group of teachers. Eileen also
enjoys having U of A tutors in her math classroom.
Participants will be paid a $1000 stipend, half of which will be paid at the end of each semester. Participants will attend monthly Saturday sessions throughout the school year. These sessions provide a format to share ideas, materials, and concerns, learn new ideas, deepen mathematical knowledge, model good teaching and promote collegiality. The Saturday sessions for the 2008-2009 school year include September 13, October 25, November 15, December 6, January 24, February 14, March 7, April 4 and May 2. Participants, their mentors and coaches will attend an introductory gathering at Skyline Country Club on September 5, 5:00 - 6:30 pm. Participants are paired with a mentor teacher at their site. These
mentor teachers are selected based on their passion for teaching,
their knowledge of the subject matter, their continued quest to
improve their own effectiveness in the classroom, and their
willingness to give of their time and expertise to promote their
profession. These mentor teachers attend a summer workshop geared
towards fostering their mentoring skills. Download a mentor
teacher flyer and application. In addition to the support provided by their mentor, each new teacher is also paired with a coach. These coaches are exemplary former teachers who focus on those topics most recently presented in the Saturday sessions as well as those areas the new teachers wishes to work to improve. The coaches will make regular visits. Only twenty teachers will be accepted, on a first-come,
first-served basis. For this reason it is best to apply as soon
as possible.
